Challenging Situations for Clinical Supervisors

Most clinical supervisors receive little formal training in supervision and perceive their supervisory competencies as deficient compared to the other clinical duties they perform (Bernard & Goodyear, 2019). This is unfortunate given that supervision represents a key element within the counseling professions that serves multiple functions and is required as a standard by all licensing boards of the counseling professions. Supervision is a method for training students and new providers, for consulting with experienced providers about difficult clinical scenarios, and for managing, monitoring, and developing counselor competencies and the clinical implementation of their skills (Bernard & Goodyear, 2019).

This course presents information about supervision in the counseling professions including a review of common clinical supervision models and the multiple roles of the clinical supervisor. Common supervisory challenges are discussed followed by a review of strategies to assist clinical supervisors in managing them.

The goal of this course is to help addictions, behavioral health counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, and social work professionals in health and human services settings gain knowledge about how to manage supervision difficulties in clinical practice.
